Hughes, Nettie (2 May 1878 - 23 January 1961)

 

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. for Mrs. James (Nettie) Hughes, 82, Rt. 2 Granton, who died Monday after three weeks of hospitalization. The Rev. Virgil Holmes, pastor of the Methodist Church officiated at services from the Georgas Funeral Home.  Burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

 

Mrs. Hughes was born May 2, 1878, in Clark County, the daughter of the late Henry and Susan (Pope) Counsell. She was educated and lived most of her lifetime in Clark County.

 

She was married to William Short, who died in 1906.  Mr. Short was a cheesemaker and they lived in various factories in the area.  In 1911 she was married to James Hughes, who survives.

 

Mrs. Hughes taught school before her marriages and was active in church and community affairs. She was the Pleasant Ridge correspondent for The Clark County Press for many years.

 

Surviving Mrs. Hughes are her husband: two children from her first marriage, Eugene Short, and Mrs. William (Helen) Vine, both of Granton, Rt. 2; and two children from her second marriage, Donald Hughes of Neillsville, and Mrs. James (Aileen) Wheatley, of Mentor, O. Also ten grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren survive.

The Rev. Virgil Holmes officiated Wednesday at services from the Georgas Funeral Home for Mrs. James (Nettie) Hughes, 82, of Rt. 2 Granton. Burial was made in the Neillsville City Cemetery.

 

Pallbearers were: Jack Hughes, Jr., Glenn Short, Allen Linster, Floyd E. Short, Earl Magnuson and Dale Short.
