St. Anthony’s (25 November 1954)

Kathryn Walter was elected president of the newly organized Civics Club in the upper grade room of St. Anthony’s School recently. The treasurer’s post is being filled by Thomas Annen.

The purpose of this club is to develop better citizens by learning in a concrete way the meaning of Christian social living based on the principal of justice and charity. This aim is carried out by monthly projects the first being a candy sale, the proceeds of which were used for mission purposes.

A second project is that of organizing a school newspaper of which LaVonne Denk is the editor.

These Civics Clubs are affiliated with the Commission on American Citizenship of the Catholic University of America in Washington, D. C. This year the Commission has set up for the clubs a program of study and action under the general theme "We need one Another."  The program will stress he interdependence of urban and rural people.  In connection with this, the St. Anthony Civic Club will pay a visit this week to the local depot to see how a telegraph operates and also to be present when the train is in town so as to better understand how dependent we are on other people.

Education Week saw many parents visiting the school rooms during classes.  Lessons were given full attention on those days.
