Burzynski, Bernard John "Bern" (29 October 1940 - 4 January 2011) With flag

Bernard J. "Bern" Burzynski, age 70, left this earth unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 4, 2011, while vacationing in The Villages, FL, surrounded by the love of his family at The Villages Regional Hospital, and is now resting in the arms of Jesus.

Bernard John Burzynski was born on October 29, 1940, in Chicago, IL, the son of Benjamin and Lottie (Liszewski) Burzynski. As a young child, his family moved to Thorp where he graduated from Thorp High School in 1958.  He was united in marriage to Darlene D. Winiarczyk, his high school sweetheart, on May 14, 1960, at Pentecostal Assembly in Eau Claire and recently celebrated 50 years of marriage.

Bern served in the Wisconsin Army National Guard for four years - active duty in Fort Lewis, WA during the years of 1960 and 1961.  Bern worked as a master mechanic at his father-in-law’s Ford/Mercury dealership, Thorp Sales & Service.  He later went into a partnership with his father-in-law, Frank Winiarczyk, and brother-in-law, Eugene Raciborski, until the dealership was sold in the late 1970’s.  A few years later, Bern began his own business, Bern’s Sales & Service.  He sold the business to his son Kevin in 2007.

Despite his busy business schedule, he always found time to attend all of his grandchildren’s sporting events, the most recent being Eau Claire Memorial Hockey.  His grandchildren referred to him as "Papa" or "Papa Bern".  Upon retiring, he enjoyed bow hunting, collecting certain nostalgic items, yard and garden work, and helping his family in any way he could.

He also hummed a song and had a smile for everyone. It wasn’t hard to spend time with him and walk away with a smile yourself.  Those of us, who knew Bern, knew him to have a servant’s heart - always having time for everyone.  What a happy man he was - always optimistic about life as he pressed forward.  Bern’s faith in God, his loving family and caring friends sustained him.

He will be missed very much by many, including his wife, Darlene, children and grandchildren, including a dear friend (and best man of their wedding) of over 50 years, Dale Lee.

Bern is survived by his wife, Darlene, of Thorp; two sons: Kevin (Theresa) Burzynski of Eau Claire, WI, and Steve (Cindy) Burzynski of Fortville, IN; seven grandchildren: Kevin II, Tyler, Brady, Riley, Ellie, Haydn and Mason; and one sister, Loretta Jarocki of Withee.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Charlotte Olejniczak.

Visitation will be held at Thorp Funeral home on Friday, January 14, 2011, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.  Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 15, 2011, at Pentecostal Assembly, in Eau Claire, with Rev. Paul Bennett officiating.

Pallbearers will be Chad Hauser (Friend), Kevin Burzynski II, Tyler Burzynski, Brady Burzynski (grandsons), Brandon Raciborski (gr. nephew) and Duane Jarocki (nephew).  The burial will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery, Withee.
