Van Huizen, Jerry (29 OCT 1872 - 7 JAN 1956)

Jerry Van Huizen, 83, and a resident of Owen (Clark Co., Wis.) for more than a half century, passed away Saturday, Jan. 7, 1956, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Eau Claire, where he had been hospitalized for two days.

Although he lived here for 50 years he had been fortunate enough to enjoy the past 25 years of retirement, spending much of his time pursuing his favorite hobby of fishing.

Funeral services were held at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 10^th, from Hoeper and Kraut Funeral Parlors.  The Rev. Cecil Ward, pastor of the Methodist Church at Withee, officiated at the service, with burial being made in the family lot at Riverside Cemetery.  Services at Riverside were conducted by members of the Van Huizen-Fritz American Legion Post 123, Owen, named in honor of his son, Albert, who was killed in World War I.  Jerry himself was an honorary member of the local post.

During the chapel service vocal selections were sung by Mrs. Harris Johnson, who was accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Glen Buchanan.

Serving as pallbearers were Walter Fritz, Cornel Erickson, Arthur Thompson, C. E. Beck, Phillip Laube and Piece Owens.  Honorary pallbearers included W. K. Doonan, H.N. Hilts, David Mayo and C. N. McMillan.

Born Oct. 29, 1872, in Holland, Mr. Van Huizen was nine years old when he came to America.  Before his retirement 25 years ago he had served another 25 years as janitor in the Owen Public School system.  He was married twice, both wives having preceded him in death.

Surviving him are a daughter, Mrs. Jennie Mahon, Portage; a step-daughter, Mrs. Mabel Dursona, Dallas, Tex.; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Marth, Wausau; and two grandsons, Eugene and Dale Vanderbilt, Portage.
