Holden, Elias M. #2 (6 Dec 1836 - 5 Jul 1913)

Elias M. Holden died last Saturday morning at his home on the north side after an illness of several months duration.  Elias M. Holden was born in Jay, Essex County, New York, Dec. 6, 1836, the son of Levi and Ann Holden.  He received a limited education in his native town, his father having died when he was six years of age, and at the age of twelve years he was thrown upon his own resources, after which he supported himself by working on a farm.  At the age of sixteen years he went to live with an older brother and learned the trade of house and carriage painting at Fitchburg, Mass.  In 1857 he came to Wisconsin, remaining in Jackson County for 11 years, the balance of his life being spent in Clark County.  He worked 11 winters in the logging camps on Black River and farmed during the summer, the most of the time on his own farm.  He was united in marriage to Margaret Hyslop on Aug. 21, 1861, and on April 27, 1898, he was united in marriage to Mary Holland, who survives him.  For a number of years Mr. and Mrs. Holden have made their home in this city.

Mr. Holden enlisted in the war under Capt. O.F. Waller and served until Oct. 1865, having been in the hospital for several weeks and being given a discharge because of his physical inability to longer serve.  He was a faithful and courteous gentleman, reliable and trustworthy and he lived a life of industry and painstaking effort.  He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge and G.A.R. post.  He is survived by his wife, a half brother, James Hale, and a sister, Mrs. S.A. Bourne of Minnehatten, S.D.  The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist Church and services were conducted at the grave by the Masonic fraternity.  John Gill and Mrs. Anna Swann of Chippewa Falls, and Mrs. D.D. Adams of Garland, Wyoming, were here for the funeral.
