Ebert, Ruth Marie Louise (21 May 1912 - 10 June 2010)

Ruth Ebert, 98, of Neillsville died Thursday, June 10, 2010, at the Neillsville Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Ruth Marie Louise Ebert was born May 21, 1912, in the Township of Weston, Clark County, Wisconsin, to Julius and Anna (Hoffmann) Belter, being the youngest of eight children.  She grew up in the vicinity northwest of Neillsville near Globe.  She was educated in that area in a rural school known as the Fairview School.  She received her Christian education in the parochial school at Globe, where she was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church by Rev. Parisius and baptized by the Rev. Brandt, who was the supply pastor from St. John’s Lutheran at Neillsville.  She attended Neillsville High School, graduating with the class of 1930.  The following year she attended the Teacher Training Class under Miss Hazel Baker graduating in 1931.  Ruth then taught school in northern Clark County for several years before her marriage to Arnold Ebert Nov. 9, 1935, at Neillsville.

They lived on the home farm in Weston Township until 1948 when they moved to Neillsville where Arnold was in business with the Deep Rock Oil Co. working as the bulk man.  After Arnold’s death March 15, 1958, Ruth remained in her home on East Division Street. She then attended summer school sessions at Eau Claire Teacher’s College with the intention to renew her Teacher’s Certificate.  It was at this time she was offered the job of Neillsville City Librarian.  She then took a course in library science at Eau Claire, and after receiving her state certification she remained there for 16 ½ years.  Ruth retired in May 1975 as city librarian but continued as library consultant for one year and assisted with children’s story hour for another year and various volunteer work at the library.

Being civic-minded, she engaged in volunteer work in many organizations.  She was a leader of girl youth groups for 10 years, Memorial Hospital drive in 1953 and a charter member of he Ladies Auxiliary, serving as vice-president. She also was a charter member of the Senior Center, serving as treasurer and working diligently to acquire a meeting place on Oak Street.

She was a charter member of The Clark County Historical Society in 1965 and served as president for three years.  She was also a curator of the Jail Museum for 14 years, retiring in 1997.

Her interests were many; being an outdoors person, she loved nature and everything God left to grow.  She enjoyed her walks in the Listeman Arboretum, watching for the first flowers to unfold.  Likewise, the flowers and yard of her home were of utmost importance to her.  She loved antiques, refinishing furniture, going to auctions and flea markets and crafts.

She loved music concerts, singing, dancing and all children’s entertainment. She belonged to the "40s" Square Dance Club.  In 1966, she took her first guided travel trip and then kept going as long as she was able.  She enjoyed going to Hawaii (1977), Europe (1976) and many, many scenic places in our own U. S. A.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; her parents; three sisters, Emma Roehl, Elsie Doering, and Helen Quale; four brothers, Gustave Belter, George Belter, William Belter and Herman Belter; two nieces, Helen Graves and Mary Ehlers and one nephew, Paul Quale.
