Wasserburger, Charles (Victim of theft - 27 Apr 1913)

Sunday morning when Chas. Wasserburger got out of bed and picked up his trousers to put them on, he noticed they were considerably lighter in weight than they were when he had taken them off the night before.  Investigation developed that they were lighter by about $60 in silver and about $690 in bills and gold, a total of $750.  Mr. Wasserburger left his place of business about 11:30 Saturday night and went to bed at his home on the north side shortly after 12 o’clock.  Mrs. Wasserburger did not go to bed until nearly 1 o’clock, and it would indicate that some time between 1 and 2 o’clock, some person or persons had lifted the dining room window, entered Mr. Wasserburger’s sleeping room, gone through his clothes and departed with the $750.

There is no clue to the perpetrator of the theft, although Mr. Wasserburger says that two suspicious looking men were in his place of business Saturday night, one wearing a tan macintosh.  Saturday night a man similarly clothed opened the door at John Richardson’s house, and stepped in, but when addressed by one of the family, he turned and ran.  Whether this fellow had anything to do with robbing the Wasserburger house cannot be said, but both persons were not to be found Sunday.  Whoever stole the money had sufficient time in which to make a complete get-away and it is doubtful if Mr. Wasserburger will ever see his money again.  The robbery has some features of a home talent theft, as it is generally known that Mr. Wasserburger usually carried a considerable amount of money on his person.  As the matter stands it will be a pretty expensive lesson to Charley to convince him that his pants pocket is a poor substitute for a bank.
