Wink, Anthony (1923 - 23 JUN 1956)

A town of Reseburg (Clark Co., Wis.) farmer, Anthony Wink, 33, drowned in the north fork of the Eau Claire River, 3 miles west of Thorp, when he apparently slipped and lost footing in the swift water while swimming with five companions about 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

The body was recovered about 25 minutes later by William Nolechek, Thorp.  Nolechek and two other Thorp men, Paul and Sylvester Harycki, son of Ed Harycki, Thorp police chief, were summoned to dive for the body.

Swimming with Wink were his brother, Lawrence, 22; Rudy Fillo, 22; Larry Biddle, 20, and Edward Polnaszek, 34, all of the Thorp area.  They told authorities they had been out for the evening and had eaten at a Thorp restaurant before going swimming.  They added that Wink was not a good swimmer.

The body was taken to the Thorp Funeral Home.  Sheriff Ray Kutsche said that there probably would be no inquest.  Joining the sheriff in the investigation of the drowning were coroner John Bergemann, Police Chief Harycki and Officers, William Nelson and Richard Giese.

Wink, unmarried, lived with his father, Albert Wink, and his brother on a farm several miles south of Thorp.  A sister residing in Thorp also survives.  His mother preceded him in death.
