Bird, Ernest W. (April 22, 1922 - April 20, 2010)

 
Ernest W. Bird, 88, Abbotsford, formerly of Minneapolis, Minn., passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, under the tender care of Golden Living Center, Abbotsford, on April 20, 2010.

 
Ernie was born in Sturgeon Lake, Minn., to Joseph and Wanda (Jurek) Bird on April 22, 1922.  
 

He graduated from North High School and continued his education at Dunwoody Institute for refrigeration. He proudly joined the United States Army in August 1943, and served in World War II. He was a member of Pipe Fitters & Steam Fitters local in St. Paul, Minn. He was a commander and member of the Chester Bird Legion Club in Golden Valley, Minn. He enjoyed boating on the Mississippi River, playing the guitar, and spending time with family and friends. 
Ernie and Mary enjoyed their home in Arizona. He enjoyed driving his jeep over the rough terrain and hiking the mountains that surrounded their home. In 2002, Ernie and Mary moved to Abbotsford, in order to be close to family and friends. 

 
He is survived by his wife Mary of 63 years; his daughters, Cynthia (Richard) Standeven of Abbotsford, Barbara (Murray) Herrboldt of Hibbing, Minn.; and his son Alan (Annie) Bird of Louisville, Ky.; four grandchildren, Robert (Veronica) Standeven, Heather (Chad) Hemquist, Rebecca (Jim) Wright, Matthew Herrboldt; and three great grandchildren, Riley Standeven, Braden and Hannah Hemquist. He will be missed by many other relatives and friends.

 
Services will be held at the Chester Bird Legion Club in Golden Valley, Minn., on Monday, May 10, 2010 at 11 a.m. A time of remembrance and celebration of life will take place from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the Legion. Burial of Ashes will take place at 2 p.m. on Monday, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery with full Military Rites.

 
The Maurina Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
