Arndt, Freddie (Fatal shooting accident - 13 Oct 1912)

Sunday morning a few minutes before 7 o’clock the home of Herman Arndt, west of the river, was the scene of a fatal shooting accident in which the small son of Mr. and Mrs. Arndt was killed.  Two sons, Freddie and Raymond, aged 8 and 10 years respectively, slept together in one of the upstairs rooms, and after the family had arisen, they commenced to play about the room.  Raymond found a revolver which had been placed on a shelf in a closet by one of the older boys, and the two little fellows commenced to play "soldier."  The revolver had been in use the day before by its youthful owner, but its presence in the house was not known to Mr. and Mrs. Arndt.  It had been laid on the shelf under the impression that every shell had been shot off.  One shell, however, had missed fire, and when Raymond, the elder of the two little boys, pulled the trigger, it exploded this shell.  The little boy held the revolver, which was a 38, across his hand in such a manner as to cause a flesh wound in his finger.  The bullet from the revolver struck Freddie in the back of the head, killing him instantly.  The accident was a most deplorable one, for Freddie was a very bright little fellow and will be sadly missed by his playmates.  He was born at High Cliff, Wis.  The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, services being held at the Methodist church in this city and interment being made in the cemetery here.
