(Addendum by Don Schutte, Neillsville, Wis. 3/16/2010)

I KNEW HERMAN AND HATTIE MEIR IN THE 1940'S. WE LIVED ON A FARM ABOUT 5 MILES SOUTH OF NEILLSVILLE ON HY. 95. ON THE EAST SIDE OF HY. 95.  [NOW N2599 HY 95]. HERMAN AND HATTIE LIVED JUST NORTH ON THE WEST SIDE OF HY. 95. THEY HAD A SMALL WOOD FRAME HOUSE WITH A LIVING-DINNING ROOM DOWN AND 2 SMALL BEDROOMS UPSTAIRS.

A SMALL BARN AND MILKED 8-10 COWS. BY HAND OFF COURSE. HATTIE HAD CHICKENS AND WOULD RIDE TO TOWN WITH THE MILK HAULER JOE MAZOLA AND CASH IN HER EGGS FOR GROCERIES. MOST OF THE FOOD WAS CANNED, HOME GROWN FRUITS AND VEGIES.

ALL THE NEIGHBORS HAD CHIPPED IN FOR PIPE WRENCHES AND WELL PULLING TOOL AND OTHER WRENCHES NEEDED FOR WELL REPAIR. HERMAN WOULD DO WELL REPAIRS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD WHEN NEEDED.

HERMAN AND HATTIE DIDN'T OWN A CAR. HERMAN DROVE THE NEIGHBORS CAR [JOHN TRINKNER] TO TOWN WHEN TRINKER NEEDED SUPPLIES. THAT WAS A 1931 CHEV. I THINK, WITH A TRUNK ON THE BACK. HERMAN AND HATTIE DIDN'T HAVE A RADIO AND WOULD WALK UP TO HIS SISTER LEANA'S AND HENRY SIEDELMAN ON TUESDAY NITE TO LISTEN TO  FIBER MCGEE AND MOLLY. THEY LIVED JUST PAST US AND UP A LONG DRIVEWAY. AND ALSO ALWAYS LISTENED TO THE JOE LOIS FIGHTS.

HERMAN HAD A BIG GAS HIT AND MISS ENGINE THAT RUN HIS SAW RIG. WE COULD HEAR IT START UP EVERY SO OFF

TEN IN THE WINTER WHEN THEY SAWED WOOD FOR THE HEATER AND COOK STOVE.

AFTER HERMAN PASSED AWAY, HATTIE RENTED A LITTLE HOUSE FROM MY FOLKS THAT WAS JUST SOUTH OF HATTIE AND HERMAN'S FARM.

HATTIE BABY SAT SOMETIMES FOR OUR SON WHEN HE WAS BORN IN 1952. THEY WERE ALSO ONE OF THE FAMILIES WHO JOINED A HALF-DOZEN OTHER NEIGHBORS TO CELEBRATE BIRTHDAYS AND PLAY SHEEPHEAD AND CONSUME A PONY OF BEER.

A GOOD TIME WAS ALWAYS ENJOYED BY ALL..
