Mauritz, John (24 June 1886 - 23 Mar. 1957)

John Mauritz, Sr., 70, who had been living in retirement at Dorchester, Wisconsin for the past year, died of a heart attack at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the home of his son, Lawrence.

Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Athens, where he was born June 24, 1886. Burial followed a Requiem Mass at St. Anthony’s Catholic church, with the Rev. Frank Brickl as celebrant.

For 15 years before moving to Dorchester, Mr. Mauritz lived in Abbotsford, where he was employed by the Streckert Manufacturing Company. Prior to that he farmed in the Athens area. He served in the army during World War I. On June 13, 1921, at Athens, he married Sophia Neuenfeldt, who preceded him in death Dec. 6, 1943.

Survivors include three children, Mrs. Bernard (Emma) Ellenbecker, Unity; Lawrence and John, Jr., both of Dorchester; one sister, Mrs. William (Mary) Proft, Athens; a brother, Joseph, Athens; and 10 grand children. One son was killed in World War II and a brother, George, also preceded him in death.

Correction to obit. The son who preceded John Mauritz was Francis George (Frankie) Mauritzwho was born in 1932 and died in 1952. He was not in WWII. He was just 20 and died in  car crash in California while driving drunk. 3 other military buddies were in the car and one was paralyzed for life. I know - I am the daughter of Emma and I was at his funeral. Frankie was the driver. It was his girlfriend's car. She kept in touch with my mother for years after.  Doris Ellenbecker Leister
