Devine, Margaret (19 FEB 1878 - 8 DEC 1952)

A requiem mass was said at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Owen, at nine o’clock Friday morning, Dec. 12th, for Mrs. James Devine, Sr., with Father Crubel officiating.  Burial was made at Riverside Cemetery.  Four grandsons, Burt, Pete, Tom and Dick Devine, and two sons-in-law, Cy Janda and Joe Pawlak, Jr., Thorp, served as pallbearers.

Mrs. Devine’s death was a shock to her family and friends as she had been enjoying good health, complaining only of a slight cold Sunday.  Monday evening she fell to the floor being stricken with a fatal heart attack.  She was 74 years, 9 months and 19 days of age.

The deceased, nee Margaret Dooner, was born on Feb. 19, 1878 in the Town of Spring Valley, St. Croix Co., Wis.  On Nov. 27, 1894 she was untied in marriage to James Devine at Glenwood City, Wis.  The couple were blessed with five children, all boys, all of whom are mourning her sudden death.  She and her husband lived in Glenwood City for three years after their marriage before settling on a farm not far from Glenwood where they made their home for nine years then moving to Ladysmith in 1906.  Three years later, in 1909, they came to Owen (Clark Co., Wis.), settling on their farm at the east outskirts of the city where she had resided for 43 years.

Mr. Devine preceded her in death, having passed away on March 3, 1949.

Mrs. Devine confined most of her activities to her home and family being a devoted mother.  She was a member of the Royal Neighbor Lodge and of the Christian Mother’s group of the Holy Rosary Church.  Mourning her departure are five sons, Morris, Owen; George, Boyd, James, Withee and Howard and Jack, Milwaukee; 21 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Among those here from out of town for the services were Mr. and Mrs. George Devine and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Jackson, Boyd; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Pawlak, Jr., Thorp; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Devine, Hoard Devine and daughter Alice of Milwaukee and Marian Devine of Prairie du Chein.
