Markham, Curtis (1821 - 8 SEP 1908)

Two prominent members of the O. P. Morton post, G.A.R., of this city, Curtis Markham and Jesse R. B. Roe, have answered the last roll call, the former having died at the soldiers’ home in Leavenworth, Kan., according to information received Friday, while Mr. Roe passed away at 3:30 o’clock Wednesday morning.

Concerning details of the death of Mr. Markham, little is known. He was the most aged member of the Joplin post and for a long time his health has been bad. Recently he went to the home at Leavenworth, where he died at the age of 87.

Mr. Roe was an ex-commander of the local post. He died at his home, 1806 Pennsylvania Av., from paralysis at the age of 79 years, 7 months and 5 days. A number of months ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis. A second stroke came later and his death Wednesday was due to a third attack.

Mr. Roe was born in New Castle, Pa., going later to Topeka, from which place he came to Joplin in 1891, where he engaged in the grocery business until his health failing, he was forced to retired from business.

He is survived by a widow and one son, Joseph Roe.

Funeral services are to be conducted by Rev. George L. Peters at the Christian Church, corner of nineteenth and Pearl Streets, Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock.

Burial is to be made at Fairview cemetery, where services will be conducted by the G.A.R. and W.R.C.

(Note - There is a discrepancy on the death date for Curtis Markham. This obituary indicates that the Joplin paper was notified of his death on Friday, Sept. 11th. That was then assumed to be the death date. However, in the burial index put together in 1937 by the state of Wisconsin it shows he died on Sept. 8th. This info was provided by Curtis Markham's granddaughter, Mrs. Art Sischo. At this time we are going to list the death date as Sept. 8, 1908)
