Swenson, Franklin H. (9 Sept. 1920 - 28 Jan. 1990)

EAU CLAIRE - Dr. Franklin H. Swenson, 69, Chippewa Falls, father of Phyllis Lemoine of Marshfield and Christine Frey of Spencer, died Sunday at Chippewa Manor Nursing Home.

Private services were today at Luther Hospital Chapel, Eau Claire, with spring burial in St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Cemetery, Thorp.

The Cremation Society of Wisconsin is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Sept. 9, 1920, in Akron, Ohio, to Wesley T. and Edna (Harbough) Swenson. He attended Rankin Grade School and Buchtel High School in Akron. After graduating from high school, he enrolled in Kemper Military School and then Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating in 1943. He then went directly into the Army Anti-Aircraft Corps and was assigned to Camp Adair, Ore.

He married Irene "Polly" Pawelek in October, 1943.

At age 33, after establishing the North Hill location of Swenson’s Drive-In Restaurant, he enrolled in the Case-Western Reserve Medical School in Cleveland. He received his medical degree in 1957. Upon completion of his residency in radiology, he joined the Radiology Department at Akron City Hospital, Akron. He was elected chairman of that department in 1971 and remained chairman until he retired from the group in 1977. He then moved to Chippewa Falls and worked at Northern Wisconsin Center for Developmentally Disabled, Sacred Heart Hospital and Luther Hospital, retiring in 1986.

He is also survived by his wife; one son, John of Chippewa Falls; two other daughters, Penny Carpenter of Thomasville, Ga., and Janet Swenson of Chippewa Falls; one sister, Jean Dean of Salem, Mo.; and eight grandchildren.

The family prefers memorials to Luther Hospital Development Fund, Sacred Heart Hospital Development Fund, the North Star Club of the Northern Wisconsin Center for the Developmentally Disabled or the Chippewa Valley Museum.
