Haas, Fred (21 Mar. 1885 - 2 Apr. 1942)

Funeral services for Fred Haas, who was instantly killed on Highway 13 near Colby, Thursday afternoon, were held Monday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock, at the Lulloff funeral home, Colby, Wis. Internment was made in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery.

Mr. Haas, a bachelor about 40 years of age, who made his home with his father, William Haas, on a farm about one and a half miles east of Colby, was walking on Highway 13, about two miles north of Unity, on Thursday afternoon about 2:30. He started to cross the pavement to get a ride with Art Wiersig of Colby, Wisconsin, who was going north with his team and wagon and walked directly into the path of a car driven by Alfred Karsten of Abbotsford, Wisconsin, who, with his wife, was on the way to Marshfield. The right fender of the car struck Mr. Haas and death apparently was instantaneous.

Dr. H. H. Fechtner, Marathon county coroner, with representatives of the sheriff and traffic departments, investigated the accident and said there would be no inquest since the victim’s death was due to his own negligence and was unavoidable on the part of the driver.

At the time of the accident Mr. Haas was helping a niece on a farm near Marshfield.
