Smedegard, Lyle B. (23 JAN 1914 - 3 NOV 2013)

Lyle B. Smedegard, 99, Marshfield, died on Sunday, Nov. 3 at Golden LivingCenter-Three Oaks in Marshfield, where he had resided the past two months.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 10:30 a.m. at Hemer Funeral Home in Medford, with Rev. Richard Kelm of Aseracare Hospice of Weston officiating. Interment will be at Chelsea Community Cemetery in the Town of Chelsea. Pallbearers are his grandchildren, Brad Chipman, Kirsten Miller, Megan Ehmen, Kathy Damon and Mike and Andrew Smedegard.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 4 to 7 p.m., and on Thursday from 9 a.m. until the time of service.

Lyle Smedegard was born on January 23, 1914 in the Town of Chelsea to the late Albert Chris and Minnie (Jarchow) Smedegard. He attended Mondeaux Grade School and was a 1933 graduate of Medford High School. He was employed as a truck driver in the CCC Camps.

On October 13, 1940 in Markville, Minn., he married Marjorie Holmstrom, who preceded him in death on March 28, 1967. On November 30, 1968 in Chelsea, he married Florence Elsie Shamberg, who preceded him in death on July 10, 1991. From 1941 to 1961 he worked as a truck driver for Kimblom Service in Douglas County. From 1961 to 1978, he worked at Del Monte in Rochelle, Ill., as a boiler engineer. He retired in 1978 and returned to the Chelsea area, then moved to Medford in 2006.

He enjoyed playing horseshoes and bowling leagues.

Survivors include two sons, David L. (Mary) Smedegard of Belvidere, Ill., and Brian K. (Laurie) Smedegard of Marshfield; two daughters, Beverly A. (Al) Gelhaye of Richfield, MN, and Diane C. (Rod) Ehmen of The Villages, FL; a sister, Merle Tervi of Wausau; special friend, Margaret Seidel of Rib Lake; a sister-in-law, Louise Smedegard of Gatesville, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wives, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and Ken Smedegard, and five sisters, Leona Steen, Celia Leischer, Verna Wacek, Hazel Wuethrich and Stella Smedegard.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be given to the family for future designation.
