Etta, Jacob H. #3 (11 MAR 1857 - 2 JUL 1944)

Jacob Henry Etta died on Sunday, July 2, at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Stabnow, in Greenwood. He had been ill since Memorial day, when he suffered a paralytic stroke.

He was born in Auburn township, Fond du Lac county, Mar 11, 1857, and had attained the age of 87 years, three months and 21 days. On July 4, 1887.he was united in marriage to Anne Stange, who passed to her eternal home on Nov. 23, 1937.

To this union were born six children, who are: Elmer of Haywood, Oscar of Manitowoc, Mrs. Harold (Esther) Stabnow of Greenwood, Mrs. Perry (Maude) Volk of Loyal, Mrs. Fred (Mabel) Tolleth of Wisconsin Dells and Mrs. Carl (Florence Keiner of Eau Claire. He is also survived by three brothers, George Etta of Sunnyside, Wash., and John and Julius Etta of Kewaskum and an aged sister, Elizabeth Koerble of Kewaskum. Seven grandchildren also mourn his loss.

Mr. Etta acquired his education in the common or district school. He came to Clark county in 1882, coming to Loyal, and followed the carpenter trade, which he had previously learned. He helped build many of the business blocks and homes in the village of Loyal, which are still in use. In 1891, with his brother, Thomas, he started a shingle and planing mill, which they operated together until 1911, when they dissolved the partnership, and he started for himself in the flour and feed business. In 1913 he took his two sons, Elmer and Oscar, into the business. Mr. Etta retired from the business in 1930.

He was one of the last of the old pioneers of Loyal, having been active in business life of the village over a period of 50 years. Mr. Etta was a great help to his community, always ready and willing to lend a helping hand to his many friends, by whom he was greatly respected.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 5, at 2 o’clock at the Stabnow home in Greenwood. He was laid to rest beside his wife in the Loyal cemetery.

The Rev. A. E. Norson, pastor of the United Lutheran church at Greenwood, officiated at the rites. During the service Mrs. Calvin Prior and Mrs. Ray Prior, accompanied by Mrs. Charles Taylor, sang :Nearer My God to thee" and Beyond the Sunset."

Pallbearers were G. V. Weyhmiller, George Fisher, John Geiger, Albert Davel, Hal Voight and Clem Rous. Flower bearers were Mrs. Joe Motchenbacher and Mrs. Henry Rottjer of Loyal and Mrs. Fred Behrens, Mrs. O. J. Amundson and Mrs. Myron of Greenwood.

Relatives a from away who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Etta and son, Robert, of Hayward, Oscar Etta of Manitowoc, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Tolleth of Wisconsin Dells, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Keiner and daughters Patricia, Mary and Marle, of Eau Claire, S/Sgt. Dale Stabnow of the U.S. army, Mrs. Celia Woodkey and daughters, Virginia and Jean, of Marshfield, Clarence Etta of Minneapolis, Mrs. Bertha Etta and daughter, Eva, Herman Stange and son Romaine, and daughter, Marie, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stange, Mrs. Minnie Stange, Louis Stange and Mrs. Herman Lieske of Loyal.
