LaFlesh, Thomas J. (AUG 1835 - 22 SEP 1905)

The Portland Oregonian of Sept. 23, 1905, contained the following:

Captain Thomas Jefferson La Flesh, a veteran of the Civil War, died yesterday at the family home, 166 East Twentieth St., at the age of 69 years, 4 weeks, after he arrived from Helbrook, Calif., where he was operating a mine. Capt. LaFlesh had a distinguished record, having been promoted twice for meritorious service. He enlisted in Co. B., Second Cavalry, of the Wis. Volunteers, Dec. 27, 1862, with his commission of Second Lt., signed by Gov. Louis R. Harvey of Wisconsin. August 6, 1863, he was promoted to First Lt., his commission being signed by Gov. Edward Solomon. Again, Jan. 30, 1865, he was made Captain. He served under General Washburn, was in the siege and capture of Vicksburg, and was in many of the hard fought battles of the war. In 1889 he came to California, and was engaged in mining there up to a month ago, when, being sick, he came to Portland to be with his family. In Wisconsin, he was a member of the G.A.R. Post. He is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. J.D. Cummings, Dunsmuir, Calif.; Mrs. G. H. Williams, Chic, Calif.; George E. LaFlesh, Holbrook, Calif.; A. F. LaFlesh on way to manila as a member of the United States Cavalry band; Bessie LaFlesh, Portland. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. from the house, Rev. Henry E. Barden officiating.
