Wendel, Louisa (1 July 1862 - 4 July 1938)

Amid the pleasures and frolic of the national holiday, death crept quietly in and took unto himself one of Spencer's oldest residents, Mrs. Adolph Wendel, who for the past six weeks has been confined to her bed, suffering from cancer. She went to sleep and the end came quietly at 2 P. M. July 4, 1938.

Louisa Straub was born July 1, 1862, at Germantown, Wisconsin, where she lived until about seven years of age when she, with her parents, moved to Batavia, where she was married to Adolph Wendel, June 22, 1882. They came to Spencer, where Mr. Wendel had already established a home, in what was then a forest. All the ups and downs, the joys and sorrows of pioneer life in the woods were hers. She watched Spencer grow up and grew old with it, beloved by neighbors and friends, who found strength in the calm sweetness of her life. She was a member of the W. R. C. for many years at one time president of the local order.

The deceased was the mother of four children: Mrs. Linda Roth and Mrs. Hulda Hintz, both of Colby, Wis. One daughter, Mrs. Alma Gates, died 8 years ago, and a son, William at the age of 13 months. She is also survived by her husband, nine children and three great grandchildren. She was the last member of her family to pass away.

The funeral was held at the home at 2. P. M., Wednesday, Rev. George Carver officiating, preaching from the text, "The Saviour Comes and "Calleth for Thee," John 11-28. Mrs. Carver and Mrs. Russel Andrews sand softly the old gospel hymns, "Rock of Ages," and Jesus Saviour, Pilot Me." The Women's Relief Corp attended in a body, and carried the many beautiful flowers. Interment was in Spencer cemetery.

Relatives who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Otto Heintz, Colby; Mr. and Mrs. Wm Roth, Colby; Mr. and Mrs. Ed.
