Abeita, Sgt. Augustine D. (Military Notes - 1971)

Sgt. Augustine D. Abeita, whose wife Barba, lies in Neillsville, recently received the Silver Star while serving with the Americal Division near Chu Lai, Vietnam.

The Silver Star, third highest award for heroism, was presented to him in recognition of his act of bravery under hostile fire. The award was given for his valorous action which contributed to his unit’s successful execution of its mission against a hostile force. Adopted in 1932, the Silver Star is recognition of feats of gallantry such as his.

Sgt. Abeita received the award while assigned as a squad leader in Company C, 1st battalion, 52nd infantry of the division’s 198th brigade.

He entered the army in June, 1970, completed basic training at Frt. Knox, Ky., and was stationed at Ft. George G. Meade, Md., before arriving overseas.
