Beck, Carl J. (17 JAN 1865 - 23 NOV 1947)

Carl John Beck, one of the community’s most reputable citizens, was relieved of his suffering when he passed peacefully away at his home in the city (Owen, Clark Co., Wis.) early Sunday morning. He was 82 years, 10 months and 6 days of age at the time of departure from earthly surroundings.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock from the Griebenow Funeral Home (Owen, Wisconsin) with the Rev. Myron Glick, of the Congregational Church reading the last rites. Burial was made in the Riverside Cemetery.

Pallbearers were: Arthur Wilson, Matt Williams, Alfred Erickson, Axel Lindgren, Elvin Powers and Wm. Hingiss, R.

Carl John Beck was born on Jan. 17, 1865 at Ostergotland, Sweden and came to America when a young man of 16 years of age. He established his first residence in this country at Preemption, Ill., and worked as a farm hand until his marriage to Sophia Johnson in 1893. At that time he commenced farming for himself and did so until 1898 when they moved to Sherrard, Ill., and he worked in the coal mines for 10 years. In 1908 he moved his family to this community and settled on a farm near Owen and farmed for 13 years before retiring from the farm and established a residency in the city in 1921.

Mr. Beck had served as custodian of the Owen Bank for nearly twenty-five years. His numerous friends will always remember him by his pleasant personality and friendly salutation he had whenever he met them on the street. Others who knew him less intimately will remember him and be reminded of him when they visit the Curtiss State Bank building and see its front window lined with the most beautiful and healthy geranium plants to be seen anywhere. They were his pride and joy, and for their uncertain lives will serve as a memento of his presence with his family and friends.

Surviving his passing are a son, Carl Edwin, and a daughter, Laura S. Bulgrin, and several grandchildren, and a sister, Hilda Beck, who lives in Sweden.
