Schwarze, Durward (Boy Wonder - MAR 1929)

Durward, a former member and graduate of the "28" class of Greenwood (Clark Co., Wis.) High School, decided to become an aviator. In October Durward packed his trunk and bid his friends goodbye, especially a certain young lady, and came to Parks Air College at St. Louis. Upon arrival he was given the name "Slim" by his friends of the College, and after a few week's "Slim" began to show remarkable ability as a flyer.

We, hsi friends, knowing him to be a very modest type of young man, afraid that his restraining nature would present him from letting his friends know the extent of his remarkable ability as a flyer. While at school "Slim" was considered a flyer of no mean ability, he could put a plane in any conceivable position, still retaining perfect control and his landings were perfect.

"Slim" took his first solo flight after seven hours of dual instruction, after which he was in the air almost constantly. After completing his advance course he was eligible for an examination by the Department of Commerce. During the examination "Slim" conducted himself in a manner befitting all good aviators and won the praise of the inspector. In fact, the inspector proclaimed him the best student he had ever given an examination.

After receiving his wings and a license as Limited Commercial Pilot, he has returned home where his attention will be between shoveling snow off the sidewalk and entertaining certain young ladies.

"Slim" has changed to the extent where we think he will not find this as fascinating as flying. He will, in the future, probably perform some rather notable feats, as he is now contemplating a non-stop flight across Black River. We are pulling for him and wish him the best of luck and perhaps will see him again at Parks Airport in the near future.

By his friends of Parks Air College,
W.D. Mitchell & E.D. Schulze
