Carleton, Thomas V. #2 (14 JAN 1820 - 26 APR 1902)

T.V. Carleton, died early Saturday morning, April 26th, 1902, of paralysis, aged 83 years, 4 months, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Cornie Wightman, in West Pine Valley, and was buried here (Neillsville, Clark Co., Wis.) Monday afternoon, under the Masonic auspices and according tot eh ritual of that order, Worthy Master Spencer M. Marsh conducting.

This aged veteran of the Mexican war had for years been a unique character here, where for many years he served as tyler of the Masonic Lodge, and was held in high esteem.

He enlisted for the war with Mexico at Boston, Mass., in Dec. 1846, as a private in Co. C., 1st Regt., Mass. Vol. Inf., to serve three years or during the war; fought at Buena Vista, and from there until the troops entered Mexico City, Sept. 14, 1847. He was promoted to corporal, and honorably discharged in June 1848, at the end of the war. He tried to enlist for the Civil War, but could not on account of physical disqualifications, but served as recruiting office, and did good work. He was an intense patriot of the old school, and loved the flag. His residence here dates from back in the ‘70’s, and the writer has known him since 1879, and has greatly esteemed him as one of the very last survivors of the war of 1848.
