Pagel, Frederick (13 SEP 1845 - 31 MAY 1933)

Frederick Pagel was born in Kolberg (?), Pommerania, Germany, September 13, 1845 and passed away at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Benzmann, in Milan, Wis., Wednesday, May 31, 1933, at the age of 87 years 8 months and 19 days.

Mr. Pagel came to Wisconsin in young manhood and located in Milwaukee where on July 8, 1878 he was united in marriage to Miss Amelia Baatz. In 1879 they came north, settling two miles west of Dorchester where they resided, hewing a farm out of the vast wilderness until moving to Sturgeon Bay in 1901. Mrs. Pagel died that year and Mr. Pagel came to Milan where he had since resided at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Paul Benzmann.

Mr. and Mrs. Pagel were the parents of five children, three of whom died in infancy. The two surviving are Mrs. Benzmann of Milan and Mrs. F. Lindner of Colby, Wis. There are three grandchildren, Arlo Benzmann of Madison, Mrs. Fred Courtney of Chicago, and Arthur Lindner of Colfax, also three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held from the Bethlehem Lutheran church in Milan Saturday afternoon at two o’clock, June 3rd, the Rev. Geo. Groh officiating, and burial was made in the Milan cemetery.

That Grandpa Pagel, as he was called by young (copy unreadable) by all who knew him was shown by the very large number of (copy unreadable) who attended the funeral Saturday. In early life Mr. Pagel became a Christian and while at Dorchester helped in building the Lutheran church there and was one of the foremost in work and financial contributions when the Lutheran church at Milan was built. He was of a jolly disposition and could always be found playing pranks and joking with the children, and had a pleasant word for all.

Due to old age, Mr. Pagel was confined to his bed the past five months, never in much pain but with a gradual wearing away of the life threads which grew thinner and thinner until the end. He was given the best of care and attention in the Benzmann home and will be sadly missed, not only there but in the entire community.

Those from away attending the funeral were: Arlo Benzmann, Margaret Groh, Galen and Vernon Schmidt, Madison; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lindner and Wm. Benzmann, Colby; Mrs. Fred Courtney and children of Chicago; Arthur Lindner and family of Colfax; Mrs. Helen Gauger, Oshkosh; Mrs. and Mrs. Mike Schupsky, Mr. (Mrs.?) W. Schupsky and son Walter of Hawkins; Rev. and Mrs. W. Piehler of Merrill; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Fitzloff and sons Herman and Otto, Fred Waumpner and family, Mr. and Mrs. A. Barr, Mr. and Mrs. J. Runnick, Mrs. A. Parge, G. F. Schmidt, Mrs. Fred Guttwasser, Aug. Sauter, and Mr. and Mrs. F. Krasse of Dorchester and Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Kallep, Abbotsford, Wis.

The pallbearers were Emil Hoeft, Rudolph Chick, Earnest Kramer, Edward Stetzel, Albert Venzke and Fred Marquardt. Adell Ellingson, Walter Schupsky, Jr., Charles Courtney and Wilma Marquardt carried flowers.

The Sentinel joins with the entire community in extending sympathies to the bereaved families.
