Jaster, Arthur W. (27 Oct. 1896 - 20 Sept. 1945)

At the last rites for Arthur W. Jaster, held Sunday afternoon at St. John’s Lutheran church, the Rev. William A. Baumann paid a tribute to Mr. Jaster for his industry and church service. He told how Mr. Jaster had contributed his time without stint to the church and school, and had given encouragement to the pastor in the difficult days of war. Mr. Baumann held Mr. Jaster up as an example. The church, he said, needs men like him.

The final services were a notable expression of regard for Mr. Jaster. The church was filled with those paying their respects. Mr. Baumann spoke from the confirmation text given to Mr. Jaster’s son, Herbert, Isaiah 45:10; - "For the mountains shall depart and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee."

At the service Miss Vona Reed sang. Erich Sievert was at the organ.

The funeral party proceeded after the service here to the cemetery at Montello, the old family home, where internment took place. It was at Montello where Mr. Jaster went to school and where he worked before and after World War One, and it is there where his parents now live. In the war Mr. Jaster was a mechanic and ambulance driver, having a long service overseas. After his return he worked for a time in Montello, and finally went into the undertaking business with R. G. Wachholz of Westfield.

It was as an undertaker that Mr. Jaster came to Neillsville 10 years ago. He was at first in employment here, and after a time set up his own funeral home. To his calling he brought earnest application and professional skill. He made rapid progress in establishing himself and his services in the Neillsville community.

But Mr. Jaster did not confine his interest to his calling. He turned his hand to useful avocations. He had marked skill as a landscape gardener, and made the lawn at his funeral home a place of beauty and a community asset. He was a vegetable gardener of marked success. His last activity was in the construction of an improvement to the funeral home.

Mr. Jaster was the victim of a malignant disease. Following some weeks of suffering, he died Thursday morning, September 20. He was 48 years of age, having been born in Marquette county, Wis., on October 27, 1896. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Jaster. He married Martha Anklam of the town of Quincy, Adams county, October 15, 1922. To their marriage was born one son, Herbert, now 16 years of age.

Mr. Jaster was a member of St. John’s Lutheran church, and, by virtue of his war service, of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Jaster is survived by his wife, his son, Herbert, his parents and a brother, Gerald, of Montello.

Pallbearers were: Arne Petersen, Henry Wittke, Carl Lewerenz, Jr., R. L. Christianson, Arnold Yankee and David Parry.

Honorary pallbearers were Harry Roehrborn, Paul Bartell, Sr., Arthur Berger, Paul Blum and Henry Naedler.
