Thoma, Mr. & Mrs. W. C. (5 June 1881 - 5 June 1931)

NEILLSVILLE COUPLE MARRIED 50 YEARS

Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Thoma Feted by Friends, Relatives

Neillsville--Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Thoma, whose fiftieth wedding anniversary occurred June 5, entertained about fifty relatives and friends at a golden wedding celebration at their home on the north side Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Thoma were married at Fort Atkinson, Wis., June 5, 1881 and came to Neillsville in 1892.

Mr. Thoma was born at Oak Creek, Wis., on September 10, 1860. His father, a Lutheran minister, died when he was three years old. His mother later moved to Jefferson county, where he was reared and obtained his education.

Mrs. Thoma, nee' Ameilia Floerke, was born in Germany, December 24, 1862 and was brought to this country when she was a year and a half old. She also grew up and attended school in Jefferson county.

They engaged in farming until they came to Clark county and again took up farming, in the town of Weston. While there Mr. Thoma served as assessor, treasurer, and town chairman. He was also an organizer of the Clark County Butter Company, which he served as president for more than a decade. He was also county supervisor of assessors for four or five years.

In 1911 he became Clark county's first highway commissioner and held this position until he resigned in 1920. He declined a position with the state highway department and after 3 years on the city council was elected mayor of Neillsville, an office which he held from 1924 to 1928.

Mr. and Mrs. Thoma have five children, Benjamin on the home farm, Carl, in Neillsville, Helen, now Mrs. William Beyer of Pine Valley, Paul, at Roswell, N.M., and William at Toledo, Ore. They have 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

The two distant sons were unable to attend the celebration Sunday.
