Former Stevens Point resident, Rachel (Mrs. Melvin) Blake, departed this life on Dec. 18, 2004, at the Woodbury Health Care facility in Woodbury, Minnesota. She was 101 years old.

She was born in Bear Creek, Wisconsin, in 1903. She received her teaching credentials with the graduating class of 1923 from Central State Teachers College Normal School. She married Melvin C. Blake in 1930. Following the death of her husband in 1970, she lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Rev. Canon Arthur Becker, in Iowa. She also maintained a summer cottage in Door County.

Mrs. Blake taught high school English in Wisconsin for 30 years, many of those years in Amherst where a scholarship is named for her through The Tomorrow River Scholarship Foundation.

She is survived by three children: Dr. Bradley Blake, Las Cruces, N.M., Tom Blake of Hudson, and Lois Becker, Brooklyn Park, Minn., 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

One grandson and her sister preceded her in death. Her gentle spirit and devotion to family will be remembered by those who knew and loved her. A memorial service will be held in the spring at the Episcopal Church of the Intercession in Stevens Point. Her son-in-law, Canon Becker, will officiate.
