Miss Merle Pickett Receives Award

Of interest to local residents was a news item appearing in the Manitowoc Herald Times, Manitowoc, Wisconsin recently which told of Miss Merle Pickett, a former resident of this vicinity, being the recipient of a special award as the outstanding conservationist of Manitowoc County.

Miss Pickett, who is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Eli Pickett, was born and raised near Spencer. She has been teaching in Manitowoc for 29 years, where she is the librarian in the Washington Junior High School.

She is the first woman to receive the coveted Rahr Award for conservation. Miss Pickett was Manitowoc’s first girl scout executive and was later responsible for the formation of the junior high school bird club. She began her conservation work while a resident in this area. Her tree planting here attracted statewide attention.
