Hanawalt, George (Jul 1856 - 16 Jan. 1903)

Register - Unity, Wis.: About 5 o’clock last Friday afternoon while assisting Carl Bihlmeyer in falling timber, George Hanawalt, a resident of the town of Brighton was struck by a falling tree and instantly killed.

They had sawed down a large birch which in falling became lodged in another tree and endeavoring to dislodge it, they fell a hemlock which struck the leaning birch at right angles, the butt went up into the air several feet, then descended with terrific force, striking Mr. Hanawalt and crushing him to the ground. Death was instantaneous, his skull being fractured in several places.

TWO KILLED BY FALLING TREES.

Levi Vilwock and George Hanawalt Are the Victims.

Merrill, Wis., Jan. 13.—Levi Vilwock of Oshkosh, 21 years of age, was killed while working in the woods. A limb of a tree he had cut down caught in a tree and fell, striking him on the head.

George Hanawalt, a farmer living near Unity, Wis. was struck by a falling tree at his home last Friday and was instantly killed. He leaves a wife and five children.

Mrs. Hanawalt, the former Mary Edna Redner, was born at Berlin, Wis., July 13, 1860, and was married Aug. 6, 1887, at Grafton, N.D., to George S. Hanawalt, who died Jan. 9, 1903.

George Sigler Hanawalt was the son of William Barrick Hanawalt (21 Jul 1822, Huntindon PA - 24 Sep 1896, Dayton, WI) and Clarissa Sigler (26 Jan 1821, Decatur, PA - 31 Jan 1910, ).  He is buried in the Crystal Lake cemetery Dayton township, Waupaca Co., Wisconsin as is his wife, Mary Edna (Redner) Hanawalt.
