Schoonover, Frederick Dyle “Fred” (9 June 1927 – 2 November 2008) With Flag

 

Frederick D. “Fred” Schoonover, 81, of Black River Falls died Sunday, November 2, 2008, in the Tomah VA Medical Center after being under the care of Black River Hospice.

 

Frederick Dyle Schoonover was born June 9, 1927, in Viroqua to Ellis and Violet Jessie (Williams) Schoonover. He graduated from Viroqua High School.

 

Fred served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He also served in the Army and in the National Guard.

 

He married Marvel Travers December 27, 1950, in Hillsboro. In addition to having lived in Viroqua, Fred and Marvel also lived in Stoddard and Black River Falls. Marvel Schoonover died November 28, 1993. Fred later moved to Plover where he lived for a few years before returning to Black River Falls.

 

Fred was employed at the Nuzum Lumber of Viroqua and managed the Stoddard Lumber Company for six years. He was also employed as a draftsman/estimator by McGillivray Lumber of Black River Falls from 1960 to 1977. For 15 years, he and his son Matt owned and operated Schoonover Construction of Black River Falls. He was later employed as the Jackson County Emergency Government coordinator and manager of the Black River Falls Ambulance Service for 12 years. After retiring, he was employed as a part-time deputy sheriff for Jackson County.

 

He served as a volunteer firefighter for 37 years. He served as the fire chief at Stoddard and later as the Black River Falls Fire Chief for 12 years. Fred was instrumental, along with Dr. Charles Aprahamian, in starting the Black River Ambulance Service. Black River Falls was the second EMT class to graduate in Wisconsin. Fred’s EMT number was 63.

 

Fred was a life member of the International Fire Chiefs Association, was a charter member of the American Veterans and was a member of the Black River Falls United Methodist Church. He enjoyed traveling and reading.

 

Survivors include a daughter, Ruanne Schoonover of Baraboo; three sons, Matthew (Mary Burdick) Schoonover of Plover, Daniel Schoonover, MD, of Fairbanks, AK, and Kent (Ruth Nevel) Schoonover of Milwaukee; five grandchildren, Robert (Cynthia), Stephen, Michael, Ryan and Cyrus; and a special friend, Betty Billyard of Viroqua.

 

In addition to his wife, Marvel, Fred was preceded in death by two brothers, Keith and Earl Schoonover, and a sister, Irene Pearson.

Memorial services with military honors will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, November 7, 2008, at the Black River Falls United Methodist Church. Pastor Kathleen Jury will officiate.

 

Family and friends are invited for visitation Friday from 1 p.m. until services at the church.

 

Memorials may be given to the Black River Falls United Methodist Church, the Black River Falls Public Library or Black River Hospice.

Greengrass, Vera Marie (17 December 1946 – 30 October 2008)

 

Vera (Douglas) Marie Greengrass, 61, of Black River Falls passed away Thursday, October 30, 2008, at Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls, under the care of Black River Hospice.

 

Vera Marie Creapeau was born December 17, 1946, in Keshena to Evelyn Frances Creapeau and Glenn Warrington. She was raised in Milwaukee where she attended high school.

 

She married Douglas G. Greengrass in 1971 in Milwaukee. The couple later settled in Black River Falls.

 

Vera was employed for 15 years as a machinist at Northern Engraving, Sparta, employed by the Ho-Chunk Nation for seven years and by Leeson Manufacturing of Black River Falls for eight years.

 

She was a member of the Andrew Blackhawk American Legion Post 129 Auxiliary Unit. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, doing puzzles and watching TV.

 

Survivors include her husband, Douglas; three daughters, Christine (George) Wechter of New Washington, OH, and Gwyn Greengrass and Willette Greengrass, both of Black River Falls; four sons, Ed Creapeau and Warrington Greengrass, both of Black River Falls, Troy Netzel of Shorewood and Edgar (Tina) Murr of Memphis, TN; 14 grandchildren; three sisters, Verna (Levi) Blackdeer of La Crosse, Kathy Snow of Black River Falls and Karen Snow of Wittenburg; a brother, Edward (Margaret) Snow of Keshena; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Newlyn H. Greengrass.

 

Traditional Ho-Chunk Services were held each evening (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) at the Andrew Blackhawk American Legion Post #129, W9802 Airport Rd. Black River Falls.

 

The funeral was held Sunday, November 2, 2008, at noon also at the Andrew Blackhawk American Legion Post. Louisa DeCora and Andrew Thundercloud presided over services. Burial will follow in Decorah Cemetery.

 

Family and friends were invited for visitation Saturday, November 1, 2008, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls, and Sunday from 10 a.m. until services at the Andrew Blackhawk American Legion Post. The Andrew Blackhawk American Legion Post #129 Auxiliary Unit held a service Saturday, November 1, 2008, 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

 

Memorials may be given to Black River Hospice.

Swallow, Tyrone Stewart “Cax sep” (17 October 1963 – 22 October 2008) With Flag

 

Tyrone S. Swallow, 45, of Evansdale, IA, and formerly of Black River Falls, died Wednesday, October 22, 2008 in the Sanford Medical Center, Sioux Falls, SD.

 

Tyrone Stewart Swallow was born October 17, 1963, in Black River Falls to Gaylord and Christiane (Sam) Swallow. He was raised in Black River Falls and, mainly, in the Waterloo, IA area. He graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1982.

He was a Marine Corps veteran.

 

Tyrone married Lori Morse in Iowa. In addition to having lived in Evansdale, IA, they also lived in Kansas City, MO, Independence, MO, and Lawrence, KS. He had worked at several jobs but was mainly a machinist in the paper products industry. He had worked as a machinist in Kansas City, MO, Evansdale, IA, and Waterloo, IA.

 

Survivors include his wife, Lori Swallow of Evansdale, IA; a daughter, Amanda Jo Swallow of Evansdale; a son, Vance Tyler Swallow serving with the U. S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton, CA; three brothers, Troy (Tara) Swallow of Tomah, Truman Williams, Jr. of Sparta and Francis “Frank” Williams of Black River Falls; and two sisters, Stephanie (Richard) Mueller of Waukesha and Christie Williams of Sparta.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Vance.

 

Native American Church funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 25, 2008, at the District One Community Center, rural Black River Falls. Burial with military honors by the Andrew Blackhawk American Legion Post 129 followed in the Decorah Cemetery, also in Rural Black River Falls. Stuart Lonetree presided over the services.

 

Family and friends were invited for visitation at the District One Community Center after 4 p.m. Friday and until the time of services Saturday.

 

The Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls, assisted the family with arrangements.

Squires, Robert E. (8 May 1922 – 25 October 2008) With Flag

Robert E. Squires, 86, Manawa, (Waupaca Co.) passed away at his home Saturday, October 25, 2008.

He was born May 8, 1922, in the town of Alma near Black River Falls to George and Odanah (Brown) Squires. He graduated from Black River Falls High School and attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 1942 he entered the U. S. Air Force and was trained in electronics. During World War II, he was stationed in England, where he was a radio technician on B-17 bombers.

After the war, he returned to Black River Falls and in January of 1947 moved to Manawa to manage the new Manawa Theatre and also worked at Manawa Telephone Company. It was here he met the love of his life, and July 7, 1951, he married Nancy Lamkins.

He was in business in Manawa for more than 60 years and was very proud to say he was the oldest business man in Manawa, not only in number of years but also in age. He was the telephone company’s president for nearly 40 years. During that time, he served as a member of the Wisconsin State Telephone Association Board of Directors and as its president from 1988-1989, on the Wisconsin Locally Owned Telephone Association Board of Directors and was a member of Independent Telephone Pioneers Association-Badger State Chapter.

He was past president and a long time member of the Manawa Area Chamber of Commerce and served on Manawa Industries’ Board of Directors. He was elected to several terms on the Manawa Common Council.

He was also a scoutmaster, for which he earned the Silver Beaver Award, and a member of many Masonic and Shrine organizations, including the Beja Shrine Temple, Green Bay, of which he was Potentate in 1993, and the Scottish Rites. He was an honorary member of the Moslem Temple, Detroit; the Mocha Temple, London, Canada; the Al Koran Temple, Cleveland, Ohio; the Tripoli Temple, Milwaukee, and the Zor Temple, Madison. He was also a charter member of the Royal Order of Jesters, Green Bay Court No. 197. He was a Mason for 57 years and a member and past master of the Manawa Masonic Lodge.

He was also a member of the American Legion Post 226 and of the United Methodist Church. He belonged to the Manawa Lions Club for more than 50 years.

He is survived by Nancy, his wife of 57 years; his three sons: Tom (Karen), Manawa, Brian (Susan), Waupaca, and Jim, Green Bay; one sister, Mary Ann Koeller, Green Bay; one sister-in-law, Marie (Chris) Squires, Manawa; and Many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gaylord “Bill”.

Visitation for Robert Squires was held Tuesday, October 28, 2008, at Cline-Hansen-Dahlke Funeral Home, 176 N. Bridge St., Manawa, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 29, 2008, at the United Methodist Church, 655 Depot St. Manawa. Friends may call at that church Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in the Little Wolf Cemetery, Manawa, with graveside military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church in Manawa, Shriners’ Hospitals for Children, The Beja Shrine Temple in Green Bay, the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.

Johnson, Alice I. (18 May 1917 – 22 October 2008)

 

Alice I. Johnson, 91, of Black River Falls died Wednesday morning, October 22, 2008, in the Pine View Care Center in Black River Falls.

 

Alice was born May 18, 1917, in Merrillan to Oscar and Emma (Monson) Rickard. She was raised in Merrillan and graduated from the Merrillan High School.

 

Following graduation, she attended cosmetology school in Minneapolis, MN. Alice worked as a hairdresser at Dorothy’s Beauty Shop, and she worked at the Palm’s Supper Club.

 

She married Elmo Johnson in Decorah, IA, July 15, 1938. The couple lived their entire married lives in Black River Falls. Elmo preceded Alice in death July 20, 2007.

 

She was a member of the Black River Falls Evangelical Lutheran Church.

 

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara (Paul) Hanson, Black River Falls and Brenda (Ron) Hanson, Hatfield; seven grandchildren and their families, Alisa (Scott) Brons and Corey and Samantha; Jennifer (Mike) Deutschmann and Zack, Jake and Luke; Melissa (Erik) Bo-Hansen and Molly, Carly and Gunnar; Paul (Marni) Hanson and Max, Ben and Jake; Matt (Carrie) Hanson and Grace and Julia; Amy (Kevin) Fay and Madelyn and Riley, and Beth (Rob) Hakes and Jackson, and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

In addition to her husband, Alice was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Arthur, Harlow, and Giles Rickard; a sister-in-law and her husband, Avis and Donald Biggar; a brother-in-law and his wife, Duane and Hilda Johnson.

 

There will be no visitation. Private graveside funeral services will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Black River Falls.

 

Torgerson’s Funeral Service, Black River Falls, (715-284-4321) is assisting the family with arrangements.

 

The family prefers memorials to either the Evangelical Lutheran Church or the Patient Fund at Pine View Care Center.

Jelinek, Stella (16 February 1919 – 2 November 2008)

Stella Jelinek, 89, of Black River Falls passed away Sunday, November 2, 2008, at the Black River Memorial Hospital, Black River Falls.

Stella Staszak was born February 16, 1919, in the Town of Adams (Hatfield area) to Joseph and Pauline (Plonka) Staszak. She was raised in the Town of Adams and married Charles E. “Charlie” Jelinek September 30, 1939, in Decorah, IA. Charlie Jelinek died June 8, 1992.

As a young woman, Stella was employed as a housekeeper in Chicago. Following her marriage, she and Charlie farmed on Powerhouse Road near Hatfield, until moving to a home on Allen Creek Road near Black River Falls, in 1968. She later was employed at the Thunderbird Roller Rink in Hatfield and Kisslinger Motors and Dadco Food Products, both in Black River Falls.

Stella had been a resident of the Pine View Care Center for the past nine years.

She was a member of the ZCBJ (Rotalest) of Black River Falls. She enjoyed polka music, dancing and sitting on the porch at Pine View Care Center.

Survivors include two daughters, Betty (John) Quast of Eau Clarie and Bonnie (Tarry Skorsted) Nighbor of Black River Falls; three sons, Douglas (Helen) Jelinek and Dennis (Mary) Jelinek, both of Black River Falls, and Donald (Arlene) Jelinek of Neillsville; three grandchildren, Roger Jelinek, Rebecca Quast and Rachel Quast; two sisters, Agnes Schanen and Mary Bloczynski, both of Black River Falls; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, Charlie, Stella was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert Staszak and John Staszak; and by two brothers-in-law, Lawrence Schanen and Leo Bloczynski.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 5, 2008, 11 a.m. at Buswell Funeral Home, Black River Falls. Rev. Kathleen Jury will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Hatfield Cemetery, Hatfield (Jackson Co.)

Family and friends are invited for visitation Wednesday, November 5, 2008, from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Buswell Funeral Home of Black River Falls is assisting the family with arrangements.
