Alvin Meyer (29 Jul 1919 – 5 Mar 1975)

Dorchester – Alvin Joseph Meyer, 55, Dorchester, died at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Sinai Hospital in Milwaukee. Death resulted from an apparent cerebral hemorrhage which he suffered Tuesday evening while attending a lumber dealers convention in Milwaukee.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Louis Catholic Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Gerald F. Schuh, a former pastor of the parish; the Rev. Donald M. Berg, Milladore, and the Rev. Dan Kelly, La Crosse. Burial will follow in Dorchester Catholic Cemetery *(renamed Dorchester Memorial)

Friends may call at the Kraut-Maurina Funeral Home in Dorchester after 3 p.m. Friday. There will be a parish rosary service at the funeral home at 9 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Meyer was born July 29, 1919 in the town of Mayville. His marriage on Sept. 10, 1940, at Dorchester was to the former Violet Gumz, who survives.

He had been employed by Genrich Implement Company and also farmed until 1945, then started a small business known as Meyer’s Machine Shop, where he built snow plows, truck racks, house trailers and did repair work.

He later started building forage boxes. In 1958 he designed the first self-unloading forage box, a product now known as Meyer’s Self-Unloading Forage Boxes.

The business kept increasing in size and in 1963 was incorporated as Meyer’s Manufacturing Corporation with Meyer as president. He also was president of Meyer’s Equipment Manufacturing Corporation, a business involving his brother, Paul, and a partner in Meyer’s Lumber Company with his brothers, Art and Clifford. He was vice president of the Dorchester Pole Yard.

Mr. Meyer served as a Dorchester Village Board trustee for approximately 14 years. He was an honorary member of the Dorchester Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the Dorchester Lions Club, and a director of the Dorchester Non-Profit Housing Corporation.

He served on the advisory committee of Dairyland Plaza Corporation and was instrumental in developing the Highland addition of the village of Dorchester. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Wayne (Judy) Underwood, Dorchester; four sons; Donald, Larry, Dale and Tim, all of Dorchester; six brothers, Arthur, Paul and Roy, all of Dorchester, Clifford and Raymond, both of Medford, and Ralph, Park Falls; two sisters, Mrs. Alphonse (Leona) Diers, Marshfield, and Mrs. Gerald (Evelyn) Martin, Laona; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Meyer.
