Kowiewski, John (1939? - 5 Aug. 1951)

John Kowiewski, a 12-year-old Chicago boy, was instantly killed at 1:10 P.M. Sunday when the bicycle he was riding was struck by an auto which was being driven by Frank Lentz of Gilman. The tragedy took place north of Thorp on Highway 73.

The victim, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kowiewski, who had been visiting his grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Herman and Mrs. Clyde Misfeldt, in the Thorp area, was a guest Sunday at the Leo Ryniech farm, located three miles east and three and one-half miles north of Thorp. Shortly before the accident, the boy and his companion, Donald Ryniech, age 12, left the farm home on their bikes.

According to John Bergemann, Clark county coroner, the Chicago boy reportedly demonstrated to his companion "how they cut" in front of cars in Chicago, drove in front of the Lentz car and was run over. The boy had previously demonstrated the stunt before an approaching milk truck and the driver has stopped the truck and remonstrated with the cyclist. The coroner said an inquest will be held later.
