PRINEVILLE, Ore. -- Irene Ruth Smazal passed away May 3, 2007, in Prineville, Ore. She was 83 years old.

Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, May 7, 2007, at Whispering Pines Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at the funeral home. The Rev. Stan Hoobing will officiate.

Irene was born March 10, 1924, in Granton to Walter and Viola (Dahl) Foemmel. She attended school in Wisconsin. Irene then worked for a family in Wisconsin for a period of time. She later moved to Portland, Ore., where she married Lawrence Smazal on Dec. 12, 1944. She worked as a welder in the shipyards. Irene also worked at the mill in Bridal Veil, Ore., and at Snyder Farms Cannery. She and her husband moved to Prineville, Ore., in 1961, where she worked for Coin Millwork and Clear Pine Moldings until 1974.

Irene loved traveling, going to casinos, reading, doing puzzles and working with her flowers. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.

Irene is survived by two daughters, Bobbi (James) Hornbeck of Prineville, Ore., and Casey Smazal of Brattleboro, Vt.; two grandsons, Richard Asher and Michael Asher of Prineville; three great-grandsons, Caleb Asher, Elijah Asher and Jacoby Asher of Colville, Wash.; her sister, Mildred Birkett of Rothschild; and two brothers, Walter and Gilbert Foemmel, both of Chili.

Irene is preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
