Lew, Sophie Adeline (2 April 1920 - 3 March 2008)

Sophie A. Lew, age 87, of Wausau, formerly of Thorp, passed away on Monday, March 3, 2008, at Wausau Aspirus Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2008, at St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church, in Lublin. Fr. Marion Talaga will officiate and entombment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Eau Claire. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service.

Sophie Adeline Luzinski was born on April 2, 1920 in Lublin, WI, to Frank and Theresa (Grajek) Luzinski. She was raised on the family farm and received her education in the Lublin area. Sophie was united in marriage to Walter Lew on October 14, 1929, at St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church in Lublin. They farmed between Thorp and Withee for 33 years, and then retired and moved to Thorp. Sophie volunteered at Oakbrook Health & Rehab in Thorp for 25 years, where she was known as the "Bingo Lady." She and her husband, Walter, moved to Wausau in 2006.

She was a very active member of St. Mary’s Polish National Catholic Church and was a blood donor for many years. Sophie had many interests, but especially loved spending time with her grandchildren, cooking (she was famous for her Polish food), knitting, crocheting afghans, and life.

She will be sadly missed by her husband, Walter, of Wausau; three children: Shirley (Mike) Kelley of North Bend, WA, Connie Lew of Eau Claire, and Walter Gene (Linda) Lew of Wausau; seven grandchildren; seven great-grand-children; one sister, Lottie Szemraj of Thorp; nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers: John, Alex and Anton Luzinski; and three sisters: Marie Sado, Victoria Walteraitis and Frances Wojciechowski.

In lieu of flowers, Sophie’s family requests that donations be made to the Easter Seals of Wisconsin in memory of Sophie Lew.

Thorp Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
