Mandel, Ernst (2 Feb. 1872 - 16 Aug. 1950)

Ernest Mandel died at his home in Colby, Wisconsin, Wednesday morning at 10:00 o’clock, pleurisy-pneumonia being the cause of his death. Mr. Mandel suffered a heart attack on May 23, 1950, and, apparently was improving. However, about a week ago, pleurisy-pneumonia set in which proved fatal. The body will lie in state at the Lulloff Funeral Home in Colby until Saturday, Aug. 19, when funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. at Zion Lutheran church. Burial will be made in the Green Grove cemetery.

Mr. Mandel was born in Mishicot on Feb. 2, 1872, and moved to the town of Green Grove at the age of 22. He bought a 120-acre tract of land, 20 acres of which were cleared, which he farmed, in connection with doing carpenter work. He was married to Julia Kademan on June 24, 1899. They lived on the Mandel farm until 1907, when, because of his health, Mr. Mandel discontinued farming and carpentering and went into the cheesemaking business. He operated a cheese factory in the town of Colby for 30 years. They retired from active work in 1926 and moved to the city of Colby, Wis. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on June 24, 1949.

While in the cheese business, Mr. Mandel won three first prizes on Colby cheese at the state cheesemaker’s convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He also invented the Mandel agitator, which he patented, and later sold to Damrow Brothers of Fond du Lac. This invention was a great aid in making cheese. Mr. Mandel also served the city of Colby several terms as alderman.

Surviving are his widow; three children, Albert of Town Colby, Mrs. Albert (Edna) Dins of Colby and Harry of Unity; three sisters and four brothers, Mrs. Sophia Bernhardt, Mrs. Emma Lauber, Julius Mandel, Edwin Mandel, all of Two Rivers, Mrs. Chas. Schumann of Ft. Atkinson, Albert Mandel of Freemont, Neb., Fred Mandel of Gregory, S.D. There are six grandchildren. Two brothers preceded him in death.

The deceased, like all early settlers, was a man of generous impulses and never forgot the hospitable ways of the pioneer. He delighted in doing kind, neighborly deeds, had borne adversity bravely and enjoyed prosperity quietly. He had filled the various relations in life, as son, husband, father, brother, and friend and filled them well.
