Gorsegner, William E. (10 OCTOBER 1897 - 16 MAY 1946)

Title: Former Resident Dies In Washington State

Private funeral services were held Friday, May 17, at the Christman Mortuary Chapel at Port Angeles, Washington, for William Gorsegner, formerly of Thorp. He passed away May 16 of hemorrhagic smallpox, a most virulent type of "black small pox" which he contacted while visiting a Seattle hospital, where his son Eugene, age 21, who died May 11, was a patient. His death was not due to the disease.

William E. Gorsegner was born at Thorp, Wisconsin, October 10, 1897 and spent his boyhood here. In May 1922 he was married to Miss Hattie Stigen, who passed away August 6, 1937. He and family moved to Port Angeles in September 1927 and have lived there since. He was a building contractor from the time he was 21 years of age, doing his first building in the Thorp vicinity. He was one of the most prominent contractors in Port Angeles and was engaged in seventeen important projects at the time of his death.

Besides his first wife and son Eugene, an infant daughter Gladys preceded him in death.

Surviving relatives include the widow, Mrs. Helen Gorsegner, and sons Harvey and John and one grandson of Port Angeles; five brothers, Fred of Red Bank, New Jersey, Christ of Jump River, Gust of Thorp, Carl of Withee, and Emil of Linden, Washington; four sisters Mrs. William (Rose) Warner and Miss Elsi Gorsegner, of Chicago; Mrs. Albert (Edith) Buss and Mrs. Herman (Louise) Doege of Withee.

Because of the contagiousness of the disease, his wife was the only person allowed to attend the funeral service and the interment conducted by Rev. H.R. Cederberg in Mount Angeles cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
