Schmidt, William J. (24 Aug. 1873 - 8 Nov. 1953)
William J. Schmidt died at his home in Colby, Wisconsin Sunday night after an illness of two months of a heart ailment at the age of 80 years. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock, Rev. O. Hoffmann officiating, and internment was made in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery. Pall bearers were Neal, Ronald, Richard and Roger Schmidt and Donald and Robert Horn.
Mr. Schmidt was born in Germany on August 24, 1873, and came to the United States in 1894. He settled in Sheboygan county and married Ida Lehrnan in Sheboygan on January 16, 1889. In 1908, they moved onto a farm in the town of Hull, Marathon county. They retired from farming 27 years ago and moved to the city of Colby, Wis.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. John (Tillie) Hager of Milwaukee and Mrs. Arthur (Hilda) Frane of Athens; four sons, Arthur of Town Hull, Walter of West Allis, Ervin and Raymond of Milwaukee; four sisters, Mrs. John Dickman and Mrs. William Gutknecht of Sheboygan, Mrs. Chris Koeppen of Kiel and Mrs. Martin Branstead of Alpha, Minn.; two brothers, Carl and August of Cleveland; 12 grand children.
Mr. Schmidt, being a man of a kindly and friendly disposition with generous impulses, will be remembered a long time by a host of friends. He had performed his various duties in life to the best of his ablility and filled them well.
Mrs. Schmidt will leave today, Thursday, for Milwaukee to make her home with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Hager.
