Neumann, Robert (26 Aug. 1924 - 17 Aug. 1952)

Robert Neumann of Marshfield, age 27, lost his life Sunday morning at 11:20 o’clock while using an outboard motor to test a flat-bottomed boat he had built. The boat overturned in its own wake on Long (Interlaken) Lake in the town of Lac du Flambeau in southeast Vilas county. Mrs. Neumann is the former Marie Hake, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hake of this community.

Mr. and Mrs. Neumann and her sister had gone up to the lake 14 miles from Minocqua Friday to stay at a cottage there. The victim had tried the boat with a small motor successfully and was testing its performance with a large outboard motor when the tragedy occurred about 100 feet off shore in full view of his wife, Marie. The boat capsized as he attempted to turn.

A good swimmer, Neumann, was heading to shore when he shouted for help and disappeared. His body was recovered by Vilas county authorities two hours later.

Mr. Neumann, who was employed as foreman in the cabinet shop of the Rollohome Trailer Coach Company of Marshfield, was born on August 26, 1924, in Spencer where he received his education. He was inducted into the U.S. Marine Corps in March, 1944, and served in the Pacific area. His marriage to Marie Hake took place on April 24, 1948, in Spencer, Wis. Two years after their marriage, they moved to Marshfield. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran church of Marshfield and the V.F.W.

Funeral services for Neumann were held at Marshfield Wednesday afternoon.
