Schmitt, Alphonse Roman (12 Feb. 1927 - 4 Oct. 1951)

Funeral services for Pvt. Alphonse Roman Schmitt, age 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alphonse J. Schmitt of Town Hull, a Korean War victim, were held Tuesday morning in St. Mary’s Catholic church, Rev. N. B. Beschta officiating, after which the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts of Colby performed the military rites at the grave in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery. Pall bearers were Gerald Ohlinger, Lawrence Kunze, Albert Kunze, Leon Merkes, Bernard Kunze, Layton Wibber. Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Teddy Kulas, Mary Kunze, Patty Apfelbeck and Genevieve Apfelbeck.

First reported missing in action as of Oct. 4, 1951, Pvt. Schmitt was reported killed in action on that date in a telegram received by his parents last Dec. 10.

The Town Hull serviceman entered the Army Oct. 24, 1950, and trained at Camp Polk, La., and Fort Ord, Calif., prior to departing for overseas service last April. He arrived in Japan in May and went to Korea shortly afterward.

A life-long resident of Town Hull before entering service, Pvt. Schmitt was born there Feb. 12, 1927. He worked on the home farm until he went into service.

Surviving, besides his parents, are four brothers, Emery Schmitt of Abbotsford and Mark, Linus and Timothy Schmitt, at home, and eight sisters, Mrs. Lawrence Peterson of Abbotsford, Mrs. Elmer Kocian of Colby, Mrs. Harry Kruse of Des Plaines, Ill., Mrs. LeRoy Fosbick of Long Beach, Calif., Mrs. Leo Lang of Wauzeka, Mrs. Angelo Zera of Evanston, Ill., Mrs. Fred Redmann of Edgar and Miss Emery Schmitt of Abbotsford, Wis. One sister, Pamela, preceded him in death.

Out of town people here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Steines and family, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Hirsch and family, Mr. and Mrs. Math Kaiser, and son, Edward, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kaiser and family and daughter, Helen, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Kirsch, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kaiser, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Knocek, George and Charles Kaiser, Peter Kaiser and daughter, Marcella, Ed Haebig, all of Marshfield; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Haebig of Wausau, Mrs. Wm. Rebholz and son, Jack, of Columbus, Mr. and Mrs. All Kaiser of Edgar, Mrs. Anna Schmitt and son, Floyd, and daughter, Winefred, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Schmitt, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Schmitt, Mrs. Albert Gierl, Mrs. Floyd Gierl and daughter, Betty, all of Athens, Alex Schmitt of Ripon, Mr. and Mrs. Isadore Schmitt of Medford, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Kruse of Des Plaines, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Leo Lang of Wauzeka, Mr. and Mrs. Angelo Zero of Evanston, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Fred Redman of Edgar.

Alphonse was a young man of good habits, of a congenial and industrious disposition and will be sadly missed by a host of friends as well as his relatives.
