Sazama, David (20 July 1945 - 15 Sept. 1948)

Joe Sazama of the town of Hull, and son, David, youngest of eight children, were instantly killed Wednesday morning at about 8:30 o’clock when the pick-up truck in which they were riding and which was being driven by Mr. Sazama, collided with a tow truck being driven by Ed Olson of Cherokee. Earl Robertson of Colby and Mrs. Sazama were taken to the Marshfield, Wisconsin Hospital for treatment of injuries received in the accident.

Both Mrs. Sazama and Mr. Robertson suffered head injuries and were unconscious when taken to the hospital but it is believed both will recover.

The accident happened at the crossroad about a mile north of Cherokee, and, at the time, Mr. Sazama, accompanied by his wife and youngest child, was driving west and Mr. Olson, accompanied by Earl Robertson, was driving north. A corn field on the southeast corner obstructed the view of both drivers causing the Olson truck to hit the Sazama truck just where the driver sat. Olson tried to swing his truck away from the pick-up. The Sazamas were on their way to town with a calf and Olson and Robertson were on their way to Wausau on a plumbing job for the Cherokee garage. The Olson truck was loaded down with about a ton of plumbing supplies.

Investigations of the accident were made by Henry Goeltzman, chief of the Marathon county traffic patrol, Frank Cartwright, and Gordon Olson, also of the Marathon county traffic patrol, and John W. Hildensperger of Wausau, Marathon county coroner.

A coroner’s jury, consisting of Ray Kriplean, Fred Dix, I. M. Firnstahl, R. W. Strathman, Jake Hauser and Matt Hoff, viewed the bodies, the trucks and the scene of the accident. A hearing will be held just as soon as the injured are out of the hospital.

Sazama is survived by seven other children, Mary, Margaret, Joseph, Dorothy, William, Anthony and Daniel, all at home. His mother, Mrs. Joseph Sazama, Sr., lives at Colby, Wisconsin.

The Sazama truck was just about completely wrecked and the Olson truck was badly damaged.

Funeral services for Mr. Sazama, age 52, and son, David, age 3, will be held at St, Mary’s Catholic church in Colby Saturday morning at 9:30 o’clock, Rev. N. B. Beschta officiating, and internment will be made in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery.
