Henkel, Gustave (26 July 1867 - 28 June 1948)

Gustave Henkel, a former Colby citizen, who suffered a stroke on April 23, 1948, and was admitted to St. Michael’s hospital, Stevens Point, on May 28, died on Monday, June 28th. Funeral services will be held this Thursday afternoon, July 1, at 2:00 P.M. at the Lulloff Funeral Home and internment will be made in the Colby (Colby, Clark Co. Wis.) Cemetery.

Gustave Henkel was born at Plymouth, Wis., on July 26th, 1867. He moved to Colby with his parents when he was 11 years of age and lived with them on a farm in the town of Hull until young manhood. On September 19, 1891, he was married to August Fuhrman, also of the town of Hull, Wisconsin. To this marriage, 13 children were born.

They remained on the farm in the town of Hull until 1900 when they sold the farm and moved into the city of Colby to engage in the dray line business which he operated. On May 7, 1903, he met with a serious accident, fracturing several vertebrae in the neck and various other injuries from which he never rallied. Due to limited health, he engaged in other businesses in the city of Colby from which he retired at the age of 72. Four years ago, after living in Colby and vicinity for 63 years, he and his wife moved to Stevens Point where they lived at 315 Oak Street.

Surviving are his wife and nine living children - Wallace, now in the maritime service and is in Iran, Jack of Anchorage, Alaska, George of Pencer, Minn., Robert and Mrs. Russell Arts of San Diego, Calif., Mrs. Fred Rochmuth of Pelican Lake, Wis., Mrs. A. A. Johnson and Mrs. Robert Elkins of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. A. S. Phipps of Stevens Point. Four children preceded him in death, a daughter, Alice, and three sons, Arvin, Clarence and Edward. Besides these children, they reared to manhood a grand son, Clarence, who died in the service of the U.S. marines in 1945. One sister, Mrs. Brehm, Sr., preceded him in death. One brother, Charles Henkel of Colby, also survives. There are eight grand children and nine great grand children.
