Scott, Gladys Mae (13 Jan. 1906 - 30 Dec. 2005)

Baraboo - Gladys Mae Oldenberg Scott passed away peacefully at Maplewood Nursing Home in Sauk City on Friday, Dec. 30, 2005, two weeks short of her 100th birthday. She was born in Unity, Wis., on Jan. 13, 1906, to George and Mae Oldenberg. Gladys began her teaching career in Unity, riding her horse Trixie to a one room school house where she taught grades 1-8.

When she married Gerald Scott, her childhood sweetheart, on June 12, 1936, she had to give up her job since only one of them was permitted to teach. She resumed her teaching career in Baraboo where she taught second and third grades at East School for 20 years. Gladys was known for involving her students in following the NASA space program. Gladys sewed most of her own clothes, many of the clothes for her family, and she and Gerald tended a large garden. Throughout their 55 year marriage, she and Gerald were active in supporting numerous environmental causes, included Citizens for Natural Resources and the International Crane Foundation. She was active in the United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, and enjoyed providing bountiful meals from the garden to all who stopped at their Crawford Street Home. One of the highest compliments she paid was to proclaim someone as, "a good eater." In retirement, Gladys participated in a writing course and corresponded regularly with a wide array of family and friends. She and Gerald attended many elder hostels where she took courses in writing. Gladys will be remembered for her selflessness, her love of visiting with others, and her love of bright flowers and birds.

She is survived by sons, Gerr (Diane) Scott of Barneveld, and Garth (Karen) Scott of Madison; grandchildren, Brian (Sue) Scott and Kimberly (Chris) Hansen; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Georgia Katzenberger of Conrad, Mont., and Ivabell Demmery of Ft. Myers, Fla.; brother, Nyle (Estelle) Oldenberg of Medford; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald; her eldest son, Grayson; and sisters, Verna Ann, Mabel, Winifred and Arlie.

Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church, 615 Broadway St., Baraboo, on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, with Pastor Forrerst S. Clark officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Burial will take place in Walnut Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Scott Scholarship (c/o BCSC) or the International Crane Foundation, Baraboo. She sleeps that peaceful Rest among the flowers. We Will not disturb her Dream-it is too Beautiful. The calm Celestial that stillness of her Presence radiates the perfect comfort from her memories we shall cherish the choicest and most precious in life. She sleeps- in a Haven of Roses.
