Baumgart, William (4 Nov. 1851 - 16 Apr. 1938)

Wiliam Baumgart, one of the old and respected pioneers of this community, died at the farm home of his son, Godfrey, three miles south of Colby, on Saturday, April 16th, old age being the cause of his departure to the heavenly goal. Funeral services were held at the Zion Lutheran church Wednesday afternoon, Rev. O. Hoffmann officiating, and internment was made in the Colby cemetery. Pall bearers were six grand sons - Theodore, Fred, Vernon, Ervin, Orville and Harold Baumgart.

The deceased was born in Sauerken, East Prussia, Germany, on Nov. 4, 1861, thus reaching the age of 86 years, 5 months and 13 days. He was married to Justine Osteige in Germany in 1875, and, in 1884, they came to the United States and purchased a wild tract of land in Clark county which by hard and diligent work they built into a splendid farm.

Mrs. Baumgart passed away July 17th, 1902, but all five children survive and are Mrs. Frank Mathisen of Watsonville, California, Carl Baumgart of Fifield, Wis., Godfrey Baumgart of town Colby, Otto Baumgart of town Hull and Mrs. F. W. Lulloff of Colby. He is also survived by one brother, Fred Baumgart of Colby, ten grand children and three great grand children.

The deceased, like all early pioneers, was a kind husband and father, of a congenial and friendly disposition, a good Christian and a diligent worker, performing his duties at all times.
