Winkel, Louis Fred (7 July 1878 - 17 June 1937)

Louis Fred Winkel of Colby, died Thursday evening, June 17th, at 8:25 at St. Michael’s Hospital at Stevens Point. He took ill about two weeks ago and was admitted at St. Michael’s Tuesday evening, June 8th. He was operated on for a ruptured appendix Friday morning, June 11th. His condition had been critical from that day. He died from the results of the operation and complications that had set in. Funeral services were held at the Reformed church Monday and internment was made in the Colby cemetery. Rev. Bertain Davis, Presbyterian pastor of Stevens Point, officiated and pall bearers were Nick Schaeffer, Wm. E. Gosse, Wm. Mueller, Walter Loos, Louis Frome and Aug. Voelker.

Mr. Winkel was born July 7, 1878, in the town of Schleswig, Manitowoc county. Within a year the family moved on a farm near Stockbridge. He was married Dec. 23, 1903, at KeWanee, Ill., to Sophia Amanda Witte of that city where the couple resided until May, 1916, when they moved to a farm at Colby and had resided there ever since. To this union three children were born - Raymond of Neillsville, Mrs. Harold Jackson and Leonard of Stevens Point. His wife preceded him in death, March 3, 1918.

Surviving, besides his three children and two great grand children are three sisters and five brothers - Hattie (Mrs. Arthur Thede) of Colby, Louise (Mrs. Arthur Valefsky) of Collins, Mary (Mrs. Christ Mueller) of Stockbridge, Carl and Ben of Rice Lake, Christ of Medford, William of Curtiss and Herman of Chilton.

Out of town relatives here for the funeral were Wm. Winkel of Curtiss, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Winkel of Chilton, Mrs. Christ Mueller of Stockbridge, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Valefsky of Collins, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Winkel and Mr. and Mrs. Ben Winkel and family of Rice Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Christ Winkel and family of Medford, Mrs. Vera Witte, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Witte and Miss Leila Day, all of KeWanee, Ill., Bernard Witte of Toulon, Ill., and John Charlet and Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Charlet of Golva, Ill.
