John Pope of Pleasant Ridge (Clark Co., Wis.), one of the old settlers of Grant Township, died Sept. 28, 1897, while at Springfield, Ill., on a visit, and his remains were brought here and buried Oct. 1st by the G.A.R. Post in this city, of which he was an honored member. His age was 65 years. He was born in England. Served as a private in Co. E., 113th Illinois Vol. Inf. He was a brother of Mrs. Henry Counsell, Wm. Pope of West Weston, and the former Mrs. Robt. Howard. Co. A.W.N.G. was represented by a squad in the funeral cortege, and a large assemblage did honor to the respected dead. He leaves a wife, and daughter, Mrs. Edward Huckstead, to mourn his loss. Rev. Hill made a few remarks at the grave.
