Lube, Mr./Mrs. August (50th Anniv. - 4 Sept. 1931)

Mr. and Mrs. August Lube, a pioneer Colby couple, who were married Sept. 4, 1881, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with their family.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Lube were born in Province Brandenburg, Germany, the former in 1858 and Mrs. Lube in 1855. They came to the United States in 1880 and lived in the town of Hermann, Sheboygan county, for two years and were married in 1881 by Professor Kuertz. In 1882, they moved to the F. Wiegman farm where they lived for three years when they purchased the farm where they resided until they moved to their present home on North Third Street seventeen years ago.

They have six children - Charles and Herman of British Columbia, Canada; Arthur, who died several years ago; August of Loyal, Wis.; Mrs. Louis Gosse of the town of Colby and one child which died in infancy. They also have twenty-five grandchildren.

Mr. Lube thinks that our present depression is not as bad as the depression which the early settlers went through. In the early days, everything was cheap but there was little money to be had for almost all products were exchanged for credit at the stores. Workers also were obliged to work for small wages and then take practically all out in trade at the lumber companies stores.
