DAM DEDICATION - LABOR DAY

All of Humbird and vicinity were elated because two nationally known speakers, Adjt. Gen. Ralph Immell and Congressman Merlin Hull, could be secured by the committee on arrangements to deliver the addresses at the dedication of the new dam and Labor Day Programs

A prayer by Rev. Weidler opened Sunday’s program, and then Chairman Sparkes welcomed the crowd of more than 2,000 people to the dedication and holiday observance. He explained at length the difficulties encountered in procuring the dam. Hon. P. A. Hemmy spoke on public works and the dissatisfaction arising, and after the christening of the dam and lake as "Lake Emerson" by Alice Lastofka, as "Miss Immell gave a fine explanation of Wisconsin’s conservation policy. The program was given from a nicely decorated float on the lake. Alma Center’s high school band furnished the day’s music, and a quartet assisted in the exercised of the dedication.

After the dedication, which program was curtailed by the windstorm a kitten-ball game was played between Alma Center and the Humbird, the former winning and nobody knows the score.

Monday’s program opened by a band concert by the Fall Creek bank, after which Assemblyman Hemmy of Jackson County introduced Hon. Merlin Hull, speaker of the day. Mr. Hull did not give a political speech, but confined his address to labor. He gave a brief history of organized labor and its leaders and their accomplishments. He spoke of what Wisconsin had done in the pioneer enactment of child labor laws, workmen’s compensation, pensions, and the life. And admonished the farmers to organize for their own protection and betterment.

The sports program followed the dinner hour. Everything went off as advertised, excepting the ladies failed to show up for the man calling contest.

The attractions after the races were the ball game between Alma Center and Strum, resulting in a score of 5 to 1 in favor of Alma Center. The game was an interesting one from start to finish and was attended by a good crowd.

Entertainment for the evening was dancing at the town hall and one-man orchestra and free motion pictures by Mr. and Mrs. M. MacRae.

The committees in charge of the arrangements wish to thank all who helped make the celebration a big success. They want to thank the big orderly crowds for their presence here, the speakers and president of the day and others who took part in the contests, and all others. N. S. Fristad, as noble grand of the Odd Fellows and commander of the Legion post, wishes to thank the public for their most liberal patronage of the concessions operated by the two organizations.

The complete financial report is given for the information of all interested. The suggestion is made that the amount unused be turned into the fire company’s fund for the purchased of new equipment, and unless objection arises that will be done.
