Sparkes, Lydia Jane (26 June 1861 - 22 June 1934)

Mrs. H. A. Sparkes died suddenly at the hospital in Eau Claire last Friday, during a major operation. She was about her home duties as usual the fore part of the week, and was feeling well enough that on Tuesday, Mr. Sparkes went to Black River Falls to spend a day with his granddaughter, Mrs. Nolop. He returned that next day. She was taken ill that night, and was taken to the hospital Friday, with the hopes that an operation would restore her health, but she passed away without regaining consciousness.

The funeral of Mrs. Sparkes was held from the Reformed church Monday afternoon. Rev. V. D. Weidler preached the burial sermon, and interment was in Mentor Cemetery. A large congregation of friend attended the burial. Members of the former camp of Modern Woodmen acted as pallbearers, and the Royal Neighbors camp was an escort. Beautiful floral emblems and sprays covered the grave. Mrs. Sparkes was a charter member of Syringa camp of Royal Neighbors, and was also a member of Humbird chapter Order of the Eastern Star.

Lydia Jane Campbell was born at Whitewater, Wisconsin, June 26, 1861, and died at Eau Claire, June 22, 1934, aged 73 years, lacking four days.

She was one of our oldest settlers, the family having moved onto a homestead in Garden Valley when she was seven years of age, after having lived in Minnesota and La Crosse. She grew to young womanhood in this vicinity and on May 14, 1884, she was united in marriage with Mrs. Henry A. Sparkes, at Augusta. Their fiftieth wedding anniversary was quietly observed at their home in this village the fourteenth of last month.

To this union were born four children, Ralph J. and Henry E. of Kansas City, Archie L. of Humbird, and Alta Ruth Davis, who preceded her mother in death. Mrs. Sparkes is survived by her husband and three sons, several grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, besides other relatives and many friends.
