Hougen, Anne (12 FEB 1835 - OCT 1931)

" ‘Mother’ Hougen has assed on in death." Thus recorded the Manitowoc Herald-News when Mrs. Anne Hougen, grandmother of H.L. Hougen of this village (Dorchester, Clark Co., Wis.), passed away last Saturday afternoon.

"Mrs. Hougen, who on Feb. 12 of this year observed her 96th birthday when friends and relatives paid her tribute as "the finest mother in the world", was one of the most unusual women of the community and she maintained her interest in her friends and in world affairs even when it became necessary for her to take to her bed in her last illness. She was generally known as "Mother" Hougen and her home on N. 14th St. was the gathering place of friends and relatives from considerable distance."

Mrs. Hougen, nee Anne Berge, was born in Norway on Feb. 12, 1835 and settled in Manitowoc Co. On Nov. 30, 1857 she was married to T.K. Hougen and lived on a farm in the town of Liberty until 1910, when they moved to Manitowoc.

Her husband preceded her in death in 1916 and she leaves three daughters, Mrs. H.E. Thompson, Kaukauna, Mrs. O. Marken, town of Liberty, Mrs. C. Brady, Manitowoc and five sons, Nels and Atty. A.L. Hougen of Manitowoc, Gulick, Portland Oregon; Edward, Wis. Rapids, and Martin of Los Angeles. Twenty grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive her.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the First Lutheran Church with Rev. D.G. Ristad officiating, and interment took place at Evergreen cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. H.L Hougen of Dorchester, attended the services.
